# Get the current profile

> Which identity is holding this token: a person, an API key, or the system.

Answers "who am I?" for the token in your hand. A [profile](/docs/) is an identity inside an [account](/docs/api-reference/accountservice/retrieves-the-current-account-for-the-token-accessing-the-api), and this returns the one the current credential belongs to.

<CodeGroup>
  ```typescript TypeScript theme={null}
  const profile = await client.profiles.whoami();
  console.log(profile.spec.type);  // 'PROFILE_TYPE_API_KEY'
  console.log(profile.spec.name);  // 'Global API Key'
  console.log(profile.spec.email); // 'apikey@cadenya.internal'
  ```

  ```go Go theme={null}
  profile, err := client.Profiles.Whoami(ctx)
  if err != nil {
  	panic(err.Error())
  }
  fmt.Println(profile.Spec.Type)  // "PROFILE_TYPE_API_KEY"
  fmt.Println(profile.Spec.Name)  // "Global API Key"
  fmt.Println(profile.Spec.Email) // "apikey@cadenya.internal"
  ```

  ```ruby Ruby theme={null}
  profile = cadenya.profiles.whoami
  puts profile.spec.type  # "PROFILE_TYPE_API_KEY"
  puts profile.spec.name  # "Global API Key"
  puts profile.spec.email # "apikey@cadenya.internal"
  ```

  ```bash cURL theme={null}
  curl "https://api.cadenya.com/v1/whoami" \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer ${CADENYA_API_KEY}"
  ```
</CodeGroup>

Account-scoped, so there is no `workspaceId` in the path.

## The four profile types

`spec.type` tells you what kind of identity signed the request:

| Type                       | Who                                                                                                                             |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `PROFILE_TYPE_USER`        | A person, from an interactive login                                                                                             |
| `PROFILE_TYPE_API_KEY`     | An [API key](/docs/api-reference/accountservice/retrieves-the-current-account-for-the-token-accessing-the-api), a machine credential |
| `PROFILE_TYPE_SYSTEM`      | Cadenya itself, on internal operations                                                                                          |
| `PROFILE_TYPE_UNSPECIFIED` | Never returned                                                                                                                  |

A key's profile has a synthetic `email` (`apikey@cadenya.internal`) and the key's name. A person's profile carries their real name and email. The `type` is how a tool decides whether it is acting for a human or a service.

## The identity trio

`whoami` is one of three account-scoped reads that together answer "who am I and what can I touch":

| Question          | Endpoint                                                                                                       |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Which identity?   | `whoami`                                                                                                       |
| Which account?    | [Get the account](/docs/api-reference/accountservice/retrieves-the-current-account-for-the-token-accessing-the-api) |
| Which workspaces? | [List workspaces](/docs/api-reference/workspaceservice/list-workspaces)                                             |

A profile moves between workspaces in an account without a fresh invite, so `whoami` names the identity and `List workspaces` names its reach. The `createdBy` you see on resources across the API is a profile of one of these types.
