# Remove a memory layer from a variation

> Detach a layer from one variation. The layer itself is untouched.

Unwire a [memory layer](/docs/api-reference/memoryservice/get-a-memory-layer-by-id) from one [variation](/docs/api-reference/agentvariationservice/list-variations). Objectives that variation runs from now on no longer see the layer's entries.

<CodeGroup>
  ```typescript TypeScript theme={null}
  await client.agents.variations.removeMemoryLayer(agentId, variationId, assignmentId, { workspaceId });
  ```

  ```go Go theme={null}
  err := client.Agents.Variations.RemoveMemoryLayer(ctx, agentID, variationID, assignmentID,
  	cadenya.AgentVariationRemoveMemoryLayerParams{WorkspaceID: cadenya.String(workspaceID)})
  ```

  ```ruby Ruby theme={null}
  cadenya.agents.variations.remove_memory_layer(
    agent_id,
    variation_id,
    assignment_id,
    workspace_id: workspace_id
  )
  ```

  ```bash cURL theme={null}
  curl -X DELETE "https://api.cadenya.com/v1/workspaces/${WORKSPACE_ID}/agents/${AGENT_ID}/variations/${VARIATION_ID}/memory_layer_assignments/${ASSIGNMENT_ID}" \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer ${CADENYA_API_KEY}"
  ```
</CodeGroup>

The `id` is the assignment's `avml_...` value, from the [attach](/docs/api-reference/agentvariationservice/attach-a-memory-layer-to-a-variation) response or the variation's `info.memoryLayerAssignments`, not the layer's id.

## The layer survives

This deletes the **assignment**, the join between the variation and the layer, not the layer. The [memory layer](/docs/api-reference/memoryservice/list-memory-layers) and its entries stay in the workspace, ready to attach to another variation. Removing the assignment cleanly frees the layer, so a layer that is no longer assigned anywhere is [deletable](/docs/api-reference/memoryservice/delete-a-memory-layer) right away, no orphaned assignment left holding it.

Objectives already running are unaffected: each froze its cascade into a `configSnapshot` at creation, so detaching a layer changes future runs, not one in flight.
